Formby Sand Dunes, Sefton, UK

I have tried to capture a satisfactory image of the Formby sand dunes on several occasions and have been thwarted by poor light, bland skies and compositions that failed to convey the sense of wildness that can occasionally be felt on this often busy beach.

Finding the right viewpoint was difficult, but I recently found this one quite close to the National Trust carpark. On that occasion, the skies were quite bland and uninteresting. I returned a couple of days later and was pleased to find the conditions I wanted.

I composed the shot to best balance all the elements of interest: the dune grasses in the foreground, the dune ridge leading into the distance, beach, sea and sky. The slow shutter speed (1/15 sec) blurred the movement in the dune grasses giving the image a dynamic feel. When viewing the larger version, the image almost appears three dimensional with a real sense of movement in the grasses and the clouds.
