Fairfield, Lake District UK

After ascending Helvellyn via Striding Edge, I decided to avoid the traditional descent route of Swirral Edge and take the more gentle route down, following the main ridge down to the cwm between Helvellyn and Fairfield. The reason was twofold: it was a great day for Winter walking and I wanted to spend as much time on the mountain as possible, and I knew there were great photographic opportunities further down the ridge.

I climbed Helvellyn in the snow a couple of years previously, and I knew that there were great viewpoints towards Fairfield. I also knew that I would be facing the sun, so any images would be backlit adding drama and atmosphere. This one is a panoramic stitch of two seperate images, taken from the summit of Dollywagon Pike, one of the peaks on the main Helvellyn ridge.
