Brocken Spectre, Lake District, UK

Many people haven’t seen a Brocken Spectre, but they can be easily seen in the mountains if you know the right conditions to see them in. It is a projection of a person’s shadow by a low sun onto mist, or cloud, below . Temperature inversions are ideal for seeing Brockens, and many could be seen on the day I took this image.

For this particular shot, I descended from Swirl How after sunrise and positioned myself near to the top of the bank of cloud below me, ensuring the sun was behind me. Once the Brocken shadow appeared, I changed position to ensure that the base of my shadow was place on the foreground rocks, giving the impression that the spectre was standing on them.
